One
of my best friends recently asked, "If you had
only one day or even one week left in your life,
what would you do"? I can't remember my
response, but afterwards I thought - let's get
that mess in the basement cleaned out and leave
things more organized for our kids. Getting
organized is a great way to start 2011.

Prioritizing
and Organizing: When my mother entered a
skilled care facility, my siblings and I had to
clean out her home and prepare it for sale. We
were overwhelmed by all the "stuff" that had
accumulated in 40 years. To be honest, we just
wanted to throw everything out. But we came to our
senses and did a pretty good job of de-cluttering
and cleaning the place in about 10 days. Here's
what we did:

First,
Take Stock: It's
true -- the hardest part of getting things done is
getting started. What finally kick-started us was
taking time to walk around, identify, and write
down the areas needing the most work or providing
the quickest payoff. We agreed to tackle those
first. Our most important organizing "tools" in
this first stage were paper, pens, and our own
brains.

Then,
Take Action: We
each took on areas to organize/clean-out based on
our own skills. My sister focused on the bedrooms,
baths, and kitchen. My brother and I tackled the
garages (yes, there were two 2-car
garages!) attic, and basement. Every item had to
go one of four ways: 1) keep it, 2) sell it, 3)
donate it, or 4) toss
it. |

But,
Take Breaks: We
were working literally from dawn til dark. After the
first few days of non-stop effort with no downtime
except to sleep, we were exhausted and
unproductive. So we agreed that we would take
10-minute breaks about every 90 minutes and longer
breaks for lunch and dinner. We discovered we
worked more efficiently (and in better humor) by
catching our breath more
often.
